US Army Medic Seeks Relief that She is Not Alone

Mr. and Mrs. Smith bought their home in 2003. Enlisting in the 1970s, Mrs. Smith served as a medic in the US Army and was honorably discharged after an injury. Mrs. Smith returned home to Texas and started working at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dallas before retiring in 2010 after almost 40 years. After Mr. Smith passed away in 2010, Mrs. Smith continued to try and maintain the property to the best of her abilities. Unfortunately, due to financial hardships, the loss of her husband, and her physical limitations, her home has become unsafe and needs critical repairs.

Mrs. Smith lives in a constant state of fear that her home may be the cause of a devastating fall or accident. Her dream is to feel safe in her own home and to be able to take pride in her home again.

It would mean relief. Relief that I am not alone in this. After serving our country in the US Army and working for the [veterans affair hospital] for decades, I want to know that my community sees my struggle. I gave everything I had to the people of my community, and now I need a little help.
— Mrs. Smith

Mrs. Smith wants to feel pride in the home that she shared with her husband. Almost 20 years ago, she and Mr. Smith bought this home; they had such pride in being the first African-American homeowners on their street. Now Mrs. Smith is embarrassed by the disrepair and she longs for her home to be the source of pride it once was.
